Quietest Person Award

Brotherhood, the male dorm club, was preparing a birthday party for three students who had had birthday over the last week. At the same event, they were handing out different awards. For instance, “best dress” and “funniest smell” and “this year’s friend of Brotherhood”.

‘Who is the quietest person on campus?’ Andrew asked while we were preparing the food and the tables. I didn’t put much thought into it, before I said in a most humble voice that I considered myself “pretty quiet”. Later, I indeed received the prize, and Andrew asked me to say a few words, my very first words in Newbold history.

Standing in front of the large audience with my certificate I carefully considered what kind of speech would have the best comedic effect. ‘Say something in Danish,’ someone suggested, but I really didn’t think that would be funny. Instead, I deliberately pretended I was trying to say something, but couldn’t. I pretended to start weeping (quietly), and I covered my face with a hand and sat down, shaking my head. Judging from the response, it proved to be the more appropriate action.

Today, an American girl asked me if I would like to preach at Student Church in the beginning of May. I guess I’ve kept quiet long enough. Time to let extrovert Lars out for some fresh air. Though I don’t think my ego needs to be fed.
